When my old dog died, I swore he would be the last. This resolution was made for many reasons, one reason the pain of loosing something you have grown to love was unbearable.
I also thought being a foster parent to wayward animals has its rewards also. Then I met this little female Rottweiler , she ended up on my doorstep needing a home.
I took one look at this beautiful dog & said finding a home would be easy. The more time I spent with this dog, the more I began to notice certain little characteristics that reminded me of my old dog "Striker".
This told me I had better move fast, I was becoming very attached to this pup. Well needless to say, I did not move fast enough, now I am hooked.
She is the smartest Rottweiler, I have ever worked with. She is very set in her ways but then again , so are most females.
This ancient breed is said to date back to the Roman Empire The Rottweiler is primarily known as one of the oldest herding breeds. the Rottweiler is good-natured, placid in basic disposition, very devoted, obedient. Their appearance is a bit intimidating to anyone not familiar with their mannerisms, their behaviour self-assured, steady and fearless. They react to their surroundings with great alertness. This breed it is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. This is very true but something I have noticed is Roti's will have an entourage of friend's but only one master. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in its environment.
These Dog's have an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent dog of extreme hardness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work, making them especially suited as a companion, guardian and general all-purpose dog.
Now because of all the above mentioned , I have to say, I do not believe Roti's are for everyone. You should never take on a Rottwieler as your first pet. Not unless you have tons of suppport & information at your finger tips.
I still recommend if this is your ery first dog, then really consider some of the other 200 domestic breeds you can choose from.
Rottweilers can be naturally protective they have a strong need for confidant leadership. They need to be challenged on a regular basis, they love to work. You can not treat a Rottwieler as an equal or like a human member of the family this being one of most new dog owner's biggest mistake. They love to much, in the dog world if everyone in the pack was equal then it would be total chaos.
So if you have read everything & done your homework , now you still feel a Rottwieler is your best choice. Then welcome to one of my most favorite breeds, you will be rewarded many times over. You will have to work with this dog in order to reap the benefits but well worth the work. This is the second most popular breed in the USA today.
I will be posting lots of Blog's about my new best friend. She does not have a name yet? I am really thinking "Marley" someone special to me gave me that one. I like it!! What do you think?
